Preparatory Treatments
Each patient has unique dental needs, and sometimes preparatory treatments are needed to ensure your gums and other tissues will provide a healthy foundation for your dentures.
If you have gum disease, periodontal treatment may be needed to improve your gum health. Extractions are sometimes required for teeth that are significantly decayed or damaged. Finally, if you have significant bone atrophy, bone grafting may be needed before you can be fitted for implant-supported dentures.
During your initial consultation, your dentist will perform a thorough examination and develop a custom treatment plan to help you achieve a healthy smile.
The Treatment
Timeline
Implant-Supported Dentures
Many patients elect to anchor their dentures with dental implants. Implants are placed in the jaw to replace the natural tooth roots. The titanium posts stimulate jawbone tissue to prevent the atrophy that normally follows tooth loss. Our patients report that implant-retained prosthetics feel and function like their natural teeth.
If you choose implant-retained dentures, you will need to undergo dental implant placement surgery. This extra step will add three to six months to your treatment timeline, but many of our patients say the benefits of implant-retained prosthetics are well worth the extra time investment.
Preserve Your Jawbone Health With Implants
Dental implants are the only restorative dentistry procedure that can stop and prevent the jawbone atrophy that can occur with tooth loss. By stopping the degenerative process, implants can maintain your jawbone health and prevent you from needing other procedures such as bone grafting later.
How to Care for Your Dentures
Maintenance
Daily cleaning of your prosthetic, teeth, and gums, as well as regular checkups, can ensure that your dentures function properly for years to come.
Adjustments
Getting used to your new prosthetic can take a few weeks or even months. We are available to make adjustments as needed.
How Long Will My Dentures Last?
It is important to remember that the materials will wear and will eventually need to be replaced. On average, a set of dentures will last about 10 years. However, with proper care and maintenance, they can last much longer. Daily cleaning and routine exams and cleanings by your Sheboygan dentist will help to keep your new smile beautiful for years to come.
Paying for Your Dentures
We do not want financial barriers to prevent patients from receiving the dental care they need. We understand dentures are an investment, so we work with most insurance providers to reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. We accept credit cards.
